우리들 이야기

인터넷 두란도 성경사전에서 ‘세례’는 ‘물 속에 들어가는(혹은 물 뿌림) 의식을 말하는데 그리스도를 주로 고백하는 사람들이 그리스도와 함께 죄에 대해 죽고 예수 그리스도의 새 생명으로 다시 태어나서(롬 6:3-5) 그리스도와 연합함(갈 3:26-27)을 상징하는 의식을 말한다. 물 속에 들어가는 것(혹은 물 뿌림)을 통해 옛 사람이 죽고, 죄를 씻고 물에서 나옴으로써 예수님과 함께 부활, 연합하는 것을 상징하는 예식이다.’라고 정리했습니다. 그래서 기독교인들이 반드시 세례를 받아야 합니다. 심지어 세례가 필요 없으신 예수님께서도 직접 세례를 받으심으로 우리에게 본을 보여주셨습니다.  그런데 세례를 말하면, 믿음을 시작하신 분들은, ‘내가 아직 성경을 한 번 읽지 않아서 받지 못합니다.’ ‘나는 아직 죄를 지어서 받지 못합니다.’ ‘나는 아직 모르는 것이 많아서 받지 못합니다.’라고 합니다. 

그런데, 이 모든 이유는 자신이 만든 이유일 뿐, 성경에서 말하는 세례 받을 수 없는 조건과 거리가 멉니다. 세례를 다른 말로 표현하면, 이제 예수님을 믿고 하나님의 자녀가 되었음을 하나님과 교회 공동체 앞에서 선포하고, 예수님의 제자로 살아보도록 노력하겠다는 약속이기 때문입니다.  우리 교회에서 매달 세례가 있어 정말 감사합니다. 어떤 분들은 자신이 과거에 세례,영세,혹은 침례를 받은 것을 돌이켜 보고, 그 때는 확신이 없는 나이이거나 또 다른 사람이 권유에 의해서 세례를 받았다고 합니다. 그래서 다시 세례를 받고 싶어 합니다. 저의 답은 그런 경우는 다시 세례 받으시기를 권합니다. 세례가 구원의 조건은 아니지만, 구원의 확신을 이제 갖게 되었다면, 세례 받는 것이 여러모로 유익합니다. 또 처음 예수님 믿기로 결심한 분들은 [예수영접모임]을 통해 어떻게 예수님을 믿는지를 배우고, 구원받은 증거로서 세례를 받으시기 바랍니다.   

Internet Durando Bible Dictionary refers to the word, "baptism", as entering (or sprinkling) water, in which those who confess Christ as Lord, die with their sin with Christ and are born again into a new life with Jesus Christ (Rom 6:3- 5) It is a ceremony that symbolizes union with Christ (Galatians 3:26-27). It symbolizes the death of our old self through entering the water (or sprinkling), resurrection, and union with Jesus by washing away sins and coming out of the water. It is important that if you are Christian to be baptized. Even Jesus, who did not need baptism, set himself by example by being baptized. However, many of us, when it comes to baptism, often say things like, “I haven’t received it because I haven’t read the Bible once”, or “I haven’t received it because I still commit sins too much or don’t know enough” These reasoning are mere excuses that do not symbolize what baptism is really meant for.

 Baptism is a promise between you and Jesus declaring to God and the church community that you are willing to become a child of God to try and live as a disciple of Jesus. We are very grateful that our church has baptisms every month. Some people look back on their baptism and say that they were at an age too young to have the assurance of salvation or that they were baptized by someone else's recommendation. If so, I recommend that you be baptized again. Baptism is not a condition for salvation, but if you now have the assurance of salvation it is beneficial in many ways. On a final note, those who want to know more about Jesus and hesitate should learn how to believe in Jesus through the [Receiving Jesus Meeting] and, eventually, receive baptism as evidence of being saved.
